Susan Boyle: Fame, Fortune and Fragility

Susan Boyle
Sometime ago I wrote a piece on Susan Boyle which suggested she was a one-hit wonder who would quickly be dropped by Simon Cowell. Since then, she has had an amazing reception in the United States and her performance of Wild Horses on last week's X-Factor was superb. Her album is one of the fastest-selling this year and she is an even bigger star in the USA than she is here. So what do I know!

However, reading reports of her American visit and seeing those photographs of her thumb-sucking, suggests a very fragile woman, who wants the fame very much, but who is also scared of it. Because of her nervous disposition, her performances are recorded, including X-Factor and she is under constant surveillance by her minders, fearful of a breakdown. She is undoubtedly a star, but isn't it kind of sad that part of her great attraction is the expectation that one day, during one of her star turns, she will fall apart right before our eyes. The ultimate in reality TV.
